📕 はじめに｜A small beginning

算数だけの約束だった。
でも、気づけば、それだけじゃなくなっていた。

（家庭教師のあと、夜）
(At night, after tutoring)

ねぇ、今日ね。
家庭教師のお給料、もらったんだけど。

Hey…
I got paid for tutoring today.

袋を開けた瞬間、
あ、って思って。

返そうとした？

Did you try to give it back?

うん。
算数だけの約束だったから。

Yeah.
We agreed it would be just math.

でもね、
「国語も、英語もやってくれてるでしょ」って。

But they said,
“You’ve been helping with Japanese and English too.”

「これでも少ない方なんだよ」って、
笑って言われて。

They smiled and said,
“This is still on the low side.”

……返せなかった。

…So I couldn’t give it back.

それはね、
お金じゃなくて、気持ちだと思うよ。
だから、ありがたく受け取っていい。

I think it wasn’t really about the money.
It was about how they felt.
So it’s okay to accept it.

……そっか。

…Yeah.

決めた金額と、
受け取ってしまった気持ちは、
同じじゃないこともある。

The amount we agree on,
and the feelings we end up accepting,
aren’t always the same.
