💭 Story Note
In Japan, late August is often associated with the end of summer vacation and the first subtle signs of autumn.
Many people remember evenings becoming cooler around this time of year. Comparing those memories with today’s weather can make seasonal changes feel especially noticeable. The story expresses that feeling through an ordinary conversation at home rather than through a scientific explanation.
📚 Vocabulary
Here are some words from this story for talking about summer, autumn, time, and memories.
| English | Japanese | Romaji |
|---|---|---|
| hot | 暑い | atsui |
| summer | 夏 | natsu |
| autumn | 秋 | aki |
| evening | 夕方 | yūgata |

「記憶」(kioku) means “memory” or “recollection.” It often refers to information or experiences that remain in someone’s mind.
For warmer, more personal memories, Japanese also commonly uses 「思い出」(omoide), meaning “a memory” or “memories” connected with past experiences.
For example:
「夏休みの思い出」
