💭 Story Note

In Japan,
people sometimes use the word
「鍋奉行」(nabe bugyō).

It describes someone
who takes charge
when people are sharing a hot pot.

A nabe bugyō may care about

what ingredients go in first,
when each ingredient should be added,
and when something is ready to eat.

The word 「奉行」(bugyō)
was originally a title
for an official or magistrate.

So 「鍋奉行」 literally sounds like
“the magistrate of the hot pot.”

Today,
the expression is usually playful.

It can describe someone
who is very particular
about how the hot pot should be cooked.

In this story,
Hachi-sensei says
he is not a nabe bugyō.

He just has
“a little preference.” 🤣

hot-pot boss / person who takes charge of the hot pot 鍋奉行 nabe bugyō
🌱 Language Tip
「鍋奉行」(nabe bugyō)
is a playful Japanese expression.

It describes someone
who takes charge
when people are eating hot pot together.

A nabe bugyō may say things like:

「先にこれを入れよう。」

Saki ni kore o ireyou.

“Let’s put this in first.”

「まだ食べないで。」

Mada tabenaide.

“Don’t eat it yet.”

The expression is usually humorous.

It does not mean
that the person is really an official.

It simply means
they are very particular
about how the hot pot should be cooked
or eaten.

So if someone keeps giving instructions
around the hot pot,

you might jokingly say:

「鍋奉行だね。」

Nabe bugyō da ne.

“You’re the hot-pot boss.”

🔰 Mix Words and Feel Their Meaning|ことばを混ぜて、感覚をつかもう

Today’s expression is
「鍋奉行」.

Try mixing it into English:

“Hachi-sensei is definitely a 鍋奉行. 🤣”

“Our 鍋奉行 always decides
what goes into the pot first.”

“Do we have a 鍋奉行
at this table?”

「鍋奉行」(nabe bugyō)
is a playful word for someone
who takes charge of the hot pot.

They may care about
the order of the ingredients,
how long things cook,
and when everyone should eat.

鍋奉行
→ nabe bugyō
→ the “hot-pot boss” 🍲
